Part 1
In this part, the examiner asks you about yourself, your home, work or studies and other familiar topics.
How do you plan your time in a day?
I am strict to myself, so I’ve got a daily planner for each single day. Basically speaking, I will finish the most difficult things in the mornings because I feel very active at that moment. As for easier tasks, I would like to put them in the afternoons or evenings.
Is it easy to manage time for you?
It’s pretty much easy for me to do so, because I’m good at making plans and I have been doing time management since I was a little kid. APPs, to-do list, notebook are all useful for me to manage time.
When do you find it hard to allocate time?
Probably when I am stuck in some disappointments or shocking things. I mean, it’s not about how hard the things are, but it’s all about how bad I feel. Sometimes I will be emotionally unstable, and that’s the moment I feel hard to allocate time, because I can’t even think for myself.
Do you like being busy?
It depends on different situation. But mostly, I enjoy being busy, no matter it’s for work or for my personal life, being busy makes me feel full inside.
Are you good at organizing time?
Well, as a person to an extent I believe I am good at organising my time. Time management is an essential skill which enables things to run smoothly. So, I always plan my day beforehand.
How do you usually organize time?
I plan my entire day beforehand by setting achievable goals for myself and also prioritise every pending task based on the importance and urgency. Moreover, I am always focused and diligent towards my work.
Do you think planning is important for time management?
Planning plays a pivotal role in effective time management. An individual needs to plan his day well in advance to make the best possible use of time. There is no point in working just for the sake of doing work. Planning gives an individual a sense of direction in the organisation and motivates him to complete assignments on time. For instance, while I’m preparing for my IELTS exam I always plan to cover every 4 modules in a day.
Why do you think some people pay to learn time management?
Well, some people are not that efficient in planning time so that’s probably what made them enroll in time management courses, on top of that, it is a systematic course that contains several skills and techniques so making those skills handy will enhance work productivity and overall performance.
Do you think children should learn to manage time?
Absolutely, learning time management skill at the tender age make children more self- sufficient by organizing or arranging their own time table. Moreover, the benefits of the skill will definitely reflect in their future life.
Part 2 In this part, you will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
Describe an item on which you spent more than expected
You should say:
What it is
How much you spent on it
Why you bought it
And explain why you think you spent more than expected
Speaking of something I spent more on than I expected, the first one that comes to mind is a funky home karaoke machine. If memory serves correctly, last August, I happened to watch a livestream show hosted by a famous live streamer named Li Jiaqi. He was selling a karaoke machine in the livestream. I thought it’d be great if I could sing karaoke at home. So, I decided to buy one on the live stream.
Unfortunately, there were too many people purchasing so it was sold out before I placed an order. I had to check the online shop that Li strongly recommended. It turned out that the price there was about 500 … higher. Honestly, I was having second thoughts because it was going to cost me an arm and a leg.
But I really felt the lack of such a device at home. It’s a very useful and practical device for those who love singing. It can connect to your TV through a cable or even WIFI. What’s better, it even has a colorful LED lighting system, which is a must-have for a cool karaoke room. I thought it was so practical that I finally decided to buy it.
As it turned out it wasn’t just an impulse purchase. Since we bought it, having a karaoke party has become the most popular fun event in our family. So, even though it was over my budget I think it was totally worth it since my family uses it from time to time.
Part 3 In this part, the examiner asks you a few more detailed questions about the same topic.
Do you often buy more than you expected?
Yeah, I’ve found that I often buy way more things than I was planning for. I think that happens the most often when I’m grocery-shopping. Everyone says that you shouldn’t buy groceries when you’re hungry, which I definitely agree with. Even though I always make a list before I go shopping, I get more than I planned for because all the food looks so appealing. It’s hard to have any self-control.
What do you think young people spend most of their money on?
I think that young people like to spend their money on new clothes and new technology. A lot of young people are very concerned about what other people think of them, so they want to wear the newest clothes and own the newest phones and devices. Plus, since they don’t usually have other responsibilities like paying bills or covering other people’s needs, they’re free to spend their money luxury items as well. For example, some young people like buying designer shoes and bags.
Do you think it is important to save money? Why?
Yes, it’s definitely important to save money. Even if you’re comfortable financially, you should be thinking ahead. Anything could happen, and you might find that suddenly you need money to pay for a damaged car or laptop. In case of emergencies, you should always have some extra money lying around. So it’s good to make plans for your money and try to save up. It’s also good to save money for fun things like vacations.
Why are some rich people reluctant to spend money on others or even themselves?
Well, sometimes, rich people don’t want to spend money because they’re very protective of their wealth. It seems confusing since they could definitely afford to splurge, but I think that the more money you get, the more you want to hold on to it so you can have even more. Plus, some people become rich after being poor or middle-class, so they have the old mindset of needing to save every penny.
Do people buy things they don’t need?
Yes, people definitely buy things they don’t need from time to time. Even when they go grocery shopping, it’s easy to pick up ingredients that weren’t on their list because they look really appealing in the moment. Plus, some people go out and buy things they don’t need as a form of therapy and relaxation- this is where the phrase retail therapy comes film.
