Part 1
In this part, the examiner asks you about yourself, your home, work or studies and other familiar topics.
Do you often send emails?
Yes, very often. I am working in an international company, and sending emails is part of my work. I send emails every single day, to my clients, my boss, and my group members. The majority of my emails are about working contents, meetings, or tasks, and the rest of them are holiday celebrations and blessings.
When would you send emails to others?
Mostly when I’m at work. I need to send emails about task arrangements and meeting summary to my group members, and I need to send reports to my department supervisor. When I’m off work, I sometimes send emails to my dentist to make an appointment, or to keep connection with my college teachers.
Is sending emails popular in China?
It now becomes a very popular way of communication in China. Students, officer workers, they all send emails very often. I know in many schools in my country, students will be taught how to write an email to teachers, to admission officers in their future college, which means we take this very seriously.
Do you think sending emails will be more or less popular in the future?
Frankly speaking, I think sending emails will be less popular in the future. Because we rely more on APPs of communication in smartphones, they are more instant, more convenient, and they will be more popular.
Do you send and receive email regularly?
I have signed up for many newsletters, google news and other websites, so I do receive emails on daily basis, but they are usually mails from the company. Apart from these, I do get mails regarding work, so our team is mostly in touch using mails. With friends, I am mostly in touch using social media, so there is no point of any other interaction online. I do reply to mails that are regarding work or sometimes chat with people on google hangouts. Yes! As I am working for an IT company, so it’s an integral part of my job to send and receive email regularly. The entire process of communication between me and my colleagues takes place via email.
Who do you usually communicate with?
Well, I always use email as an official way of sending and receiving information. I usually communicate with my colleagues and seniors regarding official work.
How often do you check your email?
As I am a customer service executive, so I have to check my emails very frequently. In fact, I have to keep my email ID logged in to give quick response to the customers. It also helps in improving the service quality of my firm.
How often do you check your mail?
Well, regularly. May be on a daily basis, I would say. Mails are important for me, because my work does not allow me to meet as many people for networking, so we mostly connect using mails, delaying the work does not make sense.
Do you think writing emails has strengthened or weakened people’s writing skills?
Definitely strengthened. We are not talking about the informal mails to friends and family where one just sends in message in whatever language they want. But, if talking about the formal mails or the semi-formal mails, people have surely improved. Because earlier it was one to one talk, but now along with talk there are messages being send. And I think writing mails gives an idea of the language as well.
What are some of the disadvantages of mails?
I think the major issue with mails is that they carry viruses. So, someone might just drop in a mail having a virus and it can harm the entire computer. In worst cases, it can read out your email address book and send themselves to a number of people around the world. The second issue is that one often gets spam messages, a lot. So, if a person does not know the difference, it surely creates a havoc.
Part 2 In this part, you will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
Describe a difficult decision that you once made
You should say:
What decision it was
What difficulties you faced
How you made the decision
And explain why it was a difficult decision
It was when I prepared the application form for the university entrance exam that I had to make an important but difficult decision. At that time, I was at a crossroads, where I had to decide which university to apply for. Actually, my interest was in economics, which was taught in two separate universities, one of which specialized in international trade while the other focused more on the national economy.
Fortunately, my sister, who graduated from an economics college, gave me some sound advice. Having weighed up the pros and cons of each school, she encouraged me to choose the university specializing in international trade. Finally, I applied for this school after thinking carefully about all the options.
At present, I feel so satisfied with the learning environment of this university that I am always thankful for my decision as well as my sister’s advice. Without her guidance, I probably wouldn’t be as content with my university life as I am.
Part 3 In this part, the examiner asks you a few more detailed questions about the same topic.
What’s the most important factor in decision-making?
Well undoubtedly, there are a number of potential factors affecting the process of decision-making. However, I guess the most significant would be that while making choices, people had better keep an objective view on the problem. Like for instance, when we are in two minds about something, taking that issue into consideration from as many aspects as possible might provide us with a well- rounded perspective. Hence, the risk of arriving at the wrong decision is likely to be reduced.
Should parents make decisions for their children?
From my point of view, that would be more of a hindrance than a help. Children should have the chance to make their own decisions and choose the best way to live their life. If parents take control of their kids, they may not only be put under pressure but they also don’t have an opportunity to learn from failure. Instead, parents had better provide support and keep an eye on their children in order to make sure that they are still on the right track.
What can people learn from wrong decision?
Well, as a matter of fact, nobody is perfect and it is inevitable that people may encounter hardships as a result of wrong decision-making before gaining success in life. Learning from past experience is an effective way to minimize the risk of repeating the same mistakes. Therefore, a poor decision not only teaches us the lesson of failure but it also gives us the courage to pick ourselves up and keep moving forward in order to reach our long-term goals.
Do you like to make quick decisions?
To be honest, even though the ability to decide quickly is an essential life skill, I’m not so keen on making impulsive choices. Instead, I would rather weigh up the pros and cons of the issue before arriving at the conclusion, especially when it comes to a life decision. Making choices on the spur of the moment stands a chance of causing serious consequences which can have long-lasting impacts on ourselves and make us regret them for the rest our lives.
Do you think adults always make better decisions than children?
Well, there is no doubt that adults have more experience than children as they live longer but it is not the case that they are able to make right choices all the time. Undoubtedly, grown-ups have a tendency to complicate the matter and hence sometimes screw up the situation. On the other hand, children tend to be more carefree and have simpler mindsets, which allow them to approach the issue directly.
