Part 1
In this part, the examiner asks you about yourself, your home, work or studies and other familiar topics.
Do you like painting / drawing? Why?
Yes, I do. I used to be fancy of drawing when I was in primary school. I just enjoyed copying the figure in my drawing book and making use of any colour as I like. I felt proud of being praised by my relatives when they saw my drawing posted on the wall of my house.
Do you like to go to art galleries?
Well, I would love to visit one, but there aren’t any in my city. Apart from that, I’m still a student with heavy workload and no money for traveling. I think I would visit one once I got a job after graduation.
Do you want to learn more about art?
No. I simply take it as sone entertainment activities to kill time like sculpturing or paper cutting, not something that I would like to pay special attention or invest, or put a lot of efforts. As I mentioned, handicrafts making is too time consuming and challenging to be adept. So, as opposed to making such stuff, I would rather spend some time listening to music and learn how to sing.
Do you think children should learn drawing?
It depends. If a child has an interest in drawing, it’s good for them to do. Parents should encourage their children to do what they like. However, it’s useless to push every child to learn drawing.
Why do primary schools have a painting class?
It’s said it’s a great time for children at primary schools to do the painting for plenty of advantages. Children can express what they think of the world through drawing, and many enjoy the various colours. Besides children will think for the figure they’d like to draw, the tool they need to complete their painting. Children will be more creative in the process of doing a painting.
Why do people display artwork (painting) at their homes?
Most people do that because of their love of artwork. For example, people in love photographing, though they are amateur, and they prefer to hang the pictures they took at home. Also, there are people enjoying artwork as a kind of decoration, and they like to appreciate the works of others. For instance, many wealthy people like to collect and display famous artwork.
Have you ever bought any painting?
Yes, I have. The only painting, I bought was the one sold at the charity activity held in my secondary school. Each year, a fete will be organised when students donate something to sell to others, and the money will be collected to help students from poor families. The painting was a copy of the famous painting “Playing Shrimps” by a new student, whom I made friends with later.
Do you think painting (or drawing) is important for adults?
Yes, I do. Adults can draw or paint what they like in their spare time. It is a hobby that won’t disturb others, and you can enjoy it very much if you can explore it deeply.
Do you still draw those pictures that you did in your childhood?
Not really. I don’t draw the sun, flowers, and trees as I did in my childhood. Now I draw those elements in a different way, in a more abstract way.
Part 2 In this part, you will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
Describe a cafe you have visited
You should say:
Where it is
What kinds of food and drinks it serves
What you do there
And explain why you like to go there
Speaking of a coffee shop, the first one that comes to mind is definitely a new coffee in a giant park located in the newly developed Fuxin district of my hometown.
Since I have a friend who moved to the district last year, I’ve visited him and toured this park several times. Whenever we go there, we always stop by that coffee shop. It’s a wonderful place to chill out with a beverage.
The café has a really good location because it’s next to a beautiful lake in our city. The lake is enormous and there are lots of beautiful sculptures made of all kinds of plants. The owner of the shop built a huge deck outside with some chairs and tables, so you can appreciate the nice sculptures peacefully or breathe in fresh air and enjoy the sparkling sun on the water while drinking coffee, which is fantastic. I often ordered a donut, their signature snack, with a cup of cappuccino at the shop. It was always a blast to sit on the deck and have a chit-chat with my friend.
Anyway, since the park hasn’t been open for that long, the coffee shop hasn’t gotten popular and crowded. So, you can always kick back and relax there like you were in your own backyard. You know, now it’s hard to find such a pleasant place in urban areas. So I really enjoy spending time at the coffee shop. It’s great to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Part 3 In this part, the examiner asks you a few more detailed questions about the same topic.
What kind of people would like to go to a cafe?
I think young adults like going to a cafe. When you’re a kid or a teenager, cafes aren’t entertaining enough to hang out at. But when you’re inyour twenties, they’re a nice place to meet up with your friends after work or on the weekends. Plus, retired people also like going to cafes because the environment there is super relaxed. It’s a nice place to have a chat over coffee or tea.
Why do young people like studying in a cafe instead of at home?
It seems to me that young people like studying at a cafe instead of at home because it’s a nice change of scene. When you’re studying at home, you might get sick of being in the same place all the time. Plus, you can get distracted by your roommates or family members. cafes offer a nice, relatively quiet atmosphere where you can focus on your own thing. It also makes studying a more appealing activity because you can enjoy a nice tea or coffee while you work.
Do Chinese people like to go to a cafe? If not, what are their social places?
Well, although not every Chinese person loves going to cafe, there are more young people who have adapted to coffee culture, and enjoy drinking coffee and hanging out with their friends at coffee shops. It’s a trend. But honestly, older people in China, like people of my parents’ generation, rarely go to a cafe. They are more used to having a meal with others at a restaurant to socialize.
Do older people in China like drinking coffee?
No, I don’t think so. As far as I know, most middle-aged and senior people don’t have the habit of drinking coffee. Very few of them have taken a liking to coffee. I think it’s mainly because they didn’t grow up with a coffee culture. Instead, they were surrounded by a strong tea culture. Plus, it’s true that coffee is fairly new in China and just got popular. I bet 30 or 40 years later when young people get older, there will be more regular coffee drinkers than today.
